Basic Vegan Sour Cream
Making vegan sour cream from silken tofu is more of an idea than a recipe; different iterations are readily available online. This is mine. But first, the back story: While “veganizing” my favorite marble cake recipe requiring sour cream, I realized that I had no vegan sour cream on hand. I don’t like to buyContinueContinue reading “Basic Vegan Sour Cream”
Basil Cloning for Late Bloomers
With cloning, you don’t have to be an avid gardener to have your own fresh basil at any time of the year. Even if you don’t have space for a container garden, it should be possible to grow your own basil plant from a sprig taken from basil you bring home from the store.
Training for Life
As we move forward, we realize that the things that have worked before either may not be appropriate or may not be enough at every stage of life. Following graduation from the University of Michigan Law School I moved to Chicago and jogged along Lake Michigan, dreaming of training for a Marathon. I had noContinueContinue reading “Training for Life”
Green Papaya Salad with Tofu
This is a Thai-Style salad that I have adapted from the amazing Thai Vegetarian Cooking (1991) by Vatharin Shumichitr. I can’t claim that it is truly Thai; I did not follow the recipe exactly, both because of the ingredients that I had on hand, and our preferences. It was still delicious!

Tahini Fudge Ice Cream is a dairy-free delight – easy to make, with rich and satisfying flavor.
Leaving Washington DC
Washington DC can be a cold and indifferent place …if you felt claustrophobic during COVID-19 lock-downs imagine how it would feel if that was all you had, all the time, with nothing to look forward to, adding in the necessity of drugging your son to help him get through the reality of his daily life and his very real feelings of being in his words ‘left behind.’
Meditations on Moving House and Reaching Your Destination
Our new back yard; the furniture we brought from the US to Israel (the cat came separately). We have arrived at our destination. Just short of three years after we left Washington DC, we completed purchase of our permanent ‘second-hand’ home here in Zichron Yaakov. Fun fact: while in the US it is common toContinueContinue reading “Meditations on Moving House and Reaching Your Destination”
Gluten Free (GF) Potato Latkes
So now it is Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday of lights and the miracle of the oil that lasted 8 days. Potato latkes cooked in oil are an enduring Hanukkah tradition and I have been making latkes at home for more than 30 years. That’s a lot of latkes! Here is my fool-proof gluten free (GF)ContinueContinue reading “Gluten Free (GF) Potato Latkes”
Gluten Free (GF) Granola
Back in the day, we used to eat granola in the morning with milk or yogurt for breakfast, as a snack throughout the day, and in the evening to top fruit or ice cream. I am not sure why we stopped making it (and eating it), however of the blue last week my husband asked if I would make him some granola. Now we are off and running again.
